In need of a democratic dictionary

"Fuck you", "Motherfucker", "Asshole", "Chutiya", "Gaandu", etc are considered foul language.

By whom?

The other day, visiting a mall, two people got into a fight for bumping into each other. The fight began with “thika muchkond side ge hogu” (loosely translates to move aside, asshole). The other man, being a man, did not back down and came back with “loude, maat mele niga irli” (mind your words, dickhead). The faces of people around them slouched as if they were dipped in a drainage. Mothers turned the heads of their kids away. I wondered if they really knew how sound travels. The other men, however, fascinated, stared at the scene. There was palpable uneasiness in the air, almost as if these words were invading their world or as if these words were considered untouchable by them.

But why was the uneasiness caused by those words?

The words one uses are always used as a shorthand to judge one's character. One's morality. And the collective morality of the society is always decided by someone, somewhere sitting at the top. They decide the acceptable decorum in the society. Anyone who doesn't toe the line is ousted psychologically from their society. And it soon becomes physical separation as well.

A young girl recently abused a "friend" of hers, and the entire nation made sure that she regretted it. It must be hard for the "friend" and the ecosystem around him to get abused by a girl, for they think girls cannot abuse men. Especially men in power. Using the entire machinery of the state and the media (that too has become the machinery of the state, or is it too early to put that information out?), they made the girl apologise. This wouldn't have been possible if the collective society hadn’t been rattled by the imagery of a girl using "such words". The same instinct of people to look away in disgust at the metro applies here. The entire nation's faces slouched in tandem.

Isn't this an attempt by society to undermine personal liberty? And a successful attempt. Liberty is the freedom to live truthfully. If the place I come from has a certain vocabulary and that cannot be used in society, does it also mean that the place I come from has no place in society? It is physical separation by morality.

Liberty is the fundamental value of a progressive society, and if merely speaking a word takes away that, two questions arise;

First, is there a need for a dictionary of democratically accepted words?

Second, is there a need for this kind of democracy at all?
